26.Februar 2014

das hier muss jetzt leider in englisch gechrieben sein denn so schrieb ich es in die Zeitung damals ueber meinen Freund welcher von seinem besten Freund erschossen wurde hier in unserm Dorf.

This is a tribute to C. MacLeod Thomas who was shot on February 26th, 2014

Dear MacLeod,
Perhaps you know how much your untimely death is upsetting us. We miss you so much. What an icon you represented in this community, “an elderly man, living in a barn” ????
You were SO MUCH MORE than that, MacLeod!

You were a well traveled man. In your younger years you taught English in Tokyo, lived in Vancouver, Montreal  and other big cities in Canada. Yet, years later, you chose to live in your barn after your farmhouse burned down near Erinsville. You would have liked to live “off the grid”, but with your failing health could not have done the work this would have involved, so you had electricity installed in your living quarters of the barn for lights, cooking, listening to music and CBC radio and watching TV.  Your wood stove kept you warm.
We have fond memories of you showing us around your magnificent property and introducing us to your many favorite places, one being a hill from which one could see at a 360 degrees radius nothing but bush dotted with little lakes.

Of your many passions, one was music and the other reading. For years you mourned the thousands of books which burned in your house fire. Through them, you had done decades of research on the many topics of your interests yet you balked at using the resources of the Internet. You insisted that that particular media would be like candy to your cerebral hunger and you’d likely speed up your failing health by never wanting to sleep again.

Even at your age, you never lost your sense of curiosity about life. You considered yourself a “monitor” of the intellectually downward trend of popular culture and its resulting dumbing-down of the masses.  Loving parodies of popular media culture on TV, you often entertained your guests with small skits of your own, improvised on the spot. Thank you for keeping us endlessly amused with your razor-sharp wit.

We applauded your strong conviction that people in general are ruled by their fears, many of which amounted to nothing more than fear of being different from the “herd”.  People’s pervasive practice of keeping up appearances and thinking like everyone else were alien to you, MacLeod.

It saddened us to see your frail health weaken you year after year.  How often did we hear you say that you’d like to die on your own land some day. Your wish was granted albeit in a stunningly tragic way.
We celebrate the privilege to have known you. You were a philosopher and TRUTH and BEAUTY were your guiding principles in life.

“An elderly man living in a barn”……..indeed.
